FernGully
FernGully begins with Magi, the leader of the fairies, telling Crysta, the next leader, a story about humans and fairies. It is said that the humans ran away because of the pollution monster Hexxus whom Magi trapped in a tree. Crysta is a very curious fairy and goes above the canopy, where fairies are not supposed to go. She meets a bat named Batty who tells everyone how he was experimented on by humans. Because Crysta wants to see the humans she takes Batty towards Mount Warning where the humans apparently reside. She sees a human boy listening to music and accidentally shrinks him. She sees a machine that is “eating” trees and almost meets the human, but Batty saves them. The human is named Zak. Zak doesn’t understand the forest because he was helping the other humans cut the trees down. Meanwhile, the humans destroy the tree that was trapping Hexxus. He therefore escapes and starts controlling the leveler, the machine the humans are using to cut down trees. Magi notices this and the fairies start reinforcing a tree in their home, FernGully, to withstand Hexxus’ power. Magi dies in the process because she uses too much magic. Crysta saves the day by again trapping Hexxus in a tree and becoming the new leader of FernGully. She turns Zak back to normal size so that he can tell the humans to stay away from FernGully.
FernGully is one of the movies that most prominently displays how the environment is affected. The movie focuses on how the rainforest is slowly dying because of human deforestation. We can see a barren wasteland at one point in the movie and at another point we see the rivers in the rainforest are all brown and muddy. This movie is trying to get humans to save the rainforest because there is deforestation today, especially in the Amazon.
